Our First Blog

September 2017

Hello everyone and welcome to our first blog! We are so very excited to share with you what goes on here at Shades of Lavender Farm. We want to use this blog to keep everyone updated on our plants, bees, product development and recipes.

I am Janene, co-owner of the farm along with my husband Scott. I hope to get everyone excited about the joys of lavender! Honestly it really doesn’t take much to get people excited about lavender, all we have to do is mention it and the conversation flows easily from there. People freely express how they use lavender in their daily lives, such as for decoration, relaxation, and healing. We are not here to promote how lavender heals, that is actually not allowed in the laws and we would not want to break any laws! But, you all are more then welcome to tell us how lavender has impacted your lives and how it has worked to benefit your own personal health. We love talking lavender and want to hear from you!

I want to tell everyone how we got started in this crazy business of lavender farming. It isn’t as romantic as I would like it to be, but this is the honest truth. The land that we fell in love with to build our home on was way larger then we had originally planned on.  We were not sure what to do with all of the extra land, so we decided to have a farm for tax purposes. There it is in all of its ugly non-romantic glory. Tax purposes, geez, so sad…..

Then something happened along the way, we (mostly me) became annoyingly excited about this farm. The more I researched lavender, and the products we could make from it, the more I literally fell in love with it. I seriously would not and will not shut up about it! I find a way to wheedle lavender into almost every-single-conversation I have with people. It doesn’t matter if they are friends or perfect strangers, I will drop the word “lavender farmer” into a conversation somehow, some way. LOL.

We have also fallen in love with this land that God allowed us to care for and we want to be good stewards of His land. When we watch the deer grazing in the wild flowers, the turkeys moseying through the lavender field or the bees buzzing in the flowers we begin to count our many blessings. So what had started as a very non-romantic journey has now become a passion of love for our land and our lavender. We have decided to not keep this peace and beauty to ourselves, but rather we want to open this up to you! Our goal is to open our farm up to the public in 2018! Yay!!

In our minds, we see visions of people walking through our lavender field finding peace. We want to have an open picnic yearly when the lavender is blooming so that your entire family can come and cut some lavender bundles to take home. You can learn about the lavender, the bees and relax with neighbors. Teaching will be very important on our farm. We will take the time to discuss the different types of lavenders, what they are used for and how you can incorporate them into your lives.

As usual, I could go on and on and on, but I will stop here and hope that I have peaked your interest in our little lavender farm. We have major goals for next year and we hope that you follow along for the wild ride along with us. I will try to post a blog about every week or so to keep you updated.

We want to thank you all for your amazing support so far and we aim to make you proud to be a part of this adventure.

Talk to you soon : )

  • Janene and Scott, your field looks beautiful. You’ve done so much work. Looks like you’re done with your pruning for the season. We are far from that…. We both know how much work is involved in our Lavender Businesses. Your products are beautiful. I wish you a great winter and looking forward to an exciting 2018 Lavender season. It’s so good to have you as a Lavender Farmer Friend.
