3 Tips on How to Grow Lavender in Michigan

It’s nearly that time of year where gardeners ask how to grow lavender in Michigan. As far as plants go, lavender is a great addition to any home’s outdoor garden, raised beds, or indoor pots. It’s an extremely versatile and hardy plant, making it uniquely suited to Michigan’s often unpredictable weather. But, how can you be certain that you’re caring for your plants properly? How do you know that they’re getting the nutrients they need? And, most importantly, how can you be sure they’ll produce the visually stunning, aromatic flowers the plant is known for?

1. Plant your lavender in the right spot

First and foremost, you want to be sure that your lavender plants are getting the right amount of sunlight. Since lavender prefers full sun, you’ll want to choose a spot that gets six to eight hours of sun per day. If you’re planting multiple plants, you’ll also want to space them at least two feet apart so that air circulates properly and diseases don’t have the opportunity to spread.

2. Use the right soil

Surprisingly, lavender tends to thrive in soil that would be considered difficult for other plants. In fact, lavender thrives in rocky, sandy soils with low fertility. If there’s a corner of your garden that hasn’t historically been suitable for other plants, it might be worth trying your plants there, as it may be ideal for lavender. Of course, if you’re planning to grow large amounts, you’ll want to perform testing to ensure that your soil isn’t too acidic, as lavender does tend to prefer more alkaline soil.

Thankfully, lavender is an extremely hardy plant.

3. Water abundantly but infrequently

As you’ve probably gathered, lavender is an extremely resilient plant that’s more than capable of enduring hardships. But, when first planted they are slightly more vulnerable. During their first season, you’ll want to water them regularly to ensure they take root. Then, once they’re healthy and established, you can ease up and water them less frequently.
